Sergeant writes: "After a flash of his real self, Morphy here misses a move which would have brought him his due reward. 21.e6 Bxe6 22.Rxe6+ fxe6 23.Ne5! (...) is a forced win."

This game was played on April 13. Deacon stated that the spurious game Morphy vs F Deacon, 1859 was played on April 18. In that game, after 11... Bd7?

white, by his own admission Jules Arnous De Riviere, missed the strongest move 12.Qb3 .. played by a blindfolded Morphy 5 days earlier. Instead he played 12.Qa4? .., which invites the crushing 12... Bc3, overlooked by black. In the sequel, Deacon managed to make more mistakes than his opponent.

Morphy agreed to many draws in his British simuls in April 1859, leaving the impression that he was going through the motions somewhat.

  MissScarlett: The score in the <Chess Monthly> of July 1859, pp.214-15, has <25. h3 Bb7 26. Nf3 Rc8 27. Rc1 Re8> instead of <25. Rc1 Re8 26. Nf3 Bb7 27. h3 Rc8> which appears in the <Era> of May 1st and the <ILN> of May 7th.
