Apr-02-12  King Death: Did Black really escape the Soviet Union after playing a couple of early games with Botvinnik or was he Milton Kagan instead? Seeing Black's name got me curious because I never heard of him before seeing this game.

Phony Benoni: <King Death> <Milton Kagan> and Adams both came from the Boston area, so they were probably frequent sparring partners and he is likely the "Kagan" in this game. But I don't know of any proof.

Unfortunately, the game was probably not from the 1947 US Open in Corpus Christi, since as far as I know nobody named "Kagan" played there:

Game Collection: US Open 1947, Corpus Christi

I hesitate only because the crosstable I followed was in bad shape, and may still contain inaccuracies.

Adams and Milton Kagan did play at the 1944 US Open in Boston, but the game was a draw:

Game Collection: US Open 1944, Boston

That is the only US Open I've found so far (through 1960) in which a "Kagan" played. Perhaps the event was an "open" tournament in the USA, but not the "US Open".
