  plang: At Madrid 1997 Salov had played 12..Be6 against Illescas and the game had ended in a draw; 12..Bd7 was new. 16 f4? was a blunder; Azmaiparashvili recommended 16 Qh6..Nd7 17 f4..f6 18 Nf3..Qf7 with a small edge for White. 19 Qa3..fxe 20 Qxa7..e3 would not have helped White.
