Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-01-08  Dr. Siggy: Here we have a good example of the use of the intriguing 4. Bf4 Bg7 5. Qa4+!? line against the Gruenfeld Defense.

It should be noted that this line seems to promise White a little more than "Lady Theory" believes, viz.: 5... Bd7 6. Qb3 Nc6 (6. ... Bc6? 7. e4 [Kevitz]) 7. e3 Na5 (7. ... dxc4 8. Qxb7! Qb8 [8... Rb8: see game] 9. Qxb8+ Rxb8 10. 0-0-0! e5 11. dxe5 Ng4 12. Rd2 Ngxe5 13. Nf3! ) 8. Qb4 Nxc4 (8. ... c6 9. cxd5! cxd5 10. Nf3 0-0 11. Ne5! Be6 12. Be2 Rc8 13. 0-0 ) 9. Qxb7! Rb8 10. Qxa7 Rxb2 11. Bxc7 Qc8 12. Bxc4! dxc4 13. Be5! .

Jan-13-08  Tomlinsky: That's a very interesting line <Dr. Siggy>. I think from the Black perspective that I more fear this continuation:

5...Bd7 6.Qb3 Nc6 7.e3 Na5 8.Qb4 Nxc4 9.Qxb7 Rb8 10.Qxa7 Rxb2 as prescribed and now <11.Na4> Qb8 12.Qxb8+ Rxb8 13.Nc5 Bf5 <14.a4> and the pesky a-pawn has now got rolling a little earlier than I would like.

Strategically, from Black's point of view, it seems that the e5 break is now pretty much forced but:

14...e5 15.de Nd7 16.Nxd7 Kxd7 17.Bxc4 dxc4 18.Rd1+ Kc8 looks like steel-underpants material. Extremely interesting though.

14...Rb2 doesn't appear to offer much with the a-pawn under starters orders and without centralcounterplay initiated.

Good stuff. Worth looking into.
