plang: Played at Linares 2001 - a 6 player double round robin won by Kasparov with +5 a full 3 points ahead of the other 5 players who all tied for 2nd-6th with -1. 10..c5 is a sideline that Karpov had played on several occasions. 11 Qg4 was a new move; 11 Bd2 and 11 0-0 had been played previously. 13 cxd!? was double edged but was the only way to play for an advantage. With Karpov in severe time trouble Shirov played for complications with 22 d5?!; more solid was 22 Qg3. After the exchange of queens Karpov had a winning position. 41..Rxe7? would have cost Black a rook after 42 Rd5+..Ke6 43 Ra6+..Kd7 44 Rd5+. Karpov missed a win with 44..h4+ 45 Kxg4..h3 46 Rf8..Ne5+ 47 Kg3..h2 48 Rxe8..h1(Q) 49 Rg8+..Kf6.
