Jul-08-05  Castle In The Sky: I wonder if there was some preagreed rule in this game, such as no one is allowed to castle.

kevin86: A strange day for this game;the Florida Keys are threatened by a hurricane---as they were in the movie,KEY LARGO-in which Bogie and Bacall co-starred.

A paraphrase of one of Bogie's famous quotes.: "On this ship, excellent performance is considered standard;standard performance is considered substandard;and substandard performance is not to be accepted." "I kid you not!"-----THE CAINE MUTINY

Nov-07-05  Anatooly Homedepotov: Bacall-Bogart movies:

To Have and Have Not (1945)
Two Guys from Milwaukee (1946)
The Big Sleep (1946)
Dark Passage (1947)
Key Largo (1948)

They were scheduled to make "Melville Goodwin, U.S.A." prior to Bogart's death (The movie's title was changed to "Top Secret Affair" with Kirk Douglas and Susan Hayward).

Aug-20-06  mack: <I saw Joni Mitchell playing in a rated chess tournament years ago.>

You wot? I bloody love Joni Mitchell... how did she do?

Nov-15-06  GufeldStudent: Also, how could Bogart miss 22.Nc6?
Feb-03-07  WBP: 22. Nxg6 is pretty tough to meet
Aug-25-07  Ed Trice: Does anyone know the backdrop for this game? Was it played during the shooting of this movie? Was this when the 19 year old Lauren said to Bogie: "You know how to whistle don't ya? You just put your lips together and blow."

Aug-25-07  Jim Bartle: No, Have and Have Not was made years earlier, assuming the date was correct. They had been married six years in 1951.
Aug-23-09  WhiteRook48: maybe black did not want to lose the queen

Once: Sad to say, but I wonder if this is a fake. The Complete Chess Addict says that all the Bogart games we have are where he lost to masters. And yet here we have a game between Bogie and his most famous leading lady...

Hmm, I wonder....

kevin86: Good entertainment-too bad they didn't stick to movies-I KID YOU NOT!!
Aug-16-10  scormus: One of my favorite screen couples. Trust Miss Bacall to bring the lady out early - but then, she always was a feisty one.

Of course it was a lousy fight, always is when there's a dame angle. Yeah, I heard the syndicate was trying to set up another one between Bogie and Jan Sterling, but the front man found out that the loser was only getting $49.07 and decided to spill the beans (OK CG, try running that through your Si)

  Domdaniel: <mack>

It's amazing
Just how close to the King and Queen
you can get
And still feel like a pawn ...

Premium Chessgames Member
  Domdaniel: or, maybe:

Woke up, it was a Staunton Gambit
And the first thing that I see
Is a big fat pawn out on e4
Bearing down on me

I can take it
I can fake it
I can maybe make it thru

But I'm still so weak
and helpless
la la la
before you
la la.

Aug-16-10  screwdriver: Pure genious! I like how Bogart got all his major pieces lined up on the e file.

chrisowen: Treble top play. In Humphrey's came late good arts pinning 6.c4 and raga flighting 9.a4. Bacall okey dokey double the queen measuring castle main priority. I'd own up to you all white pre-empts it in looking for bishop spring. Gains the upper hand relentlessly battle e6 key pounding. Curt bar defence queen snatch stands. Yipee Bogart at the wire champ hilt he win by a neck in.
Aug-16-10  Andrijadj: 21...f6??? Suicide bomber mentality by Lauren...
Aug-16-10  dumbgai: 21...f6?? terrible move

FSR: Bacall didn't quite play 3...g6 with the virtuosity Smyslov later displayed with it.

perfidious: To Have and Have Not is my favourite movie-never knew this was used as a GOTD!

<Anatooly Homedepotov: Bacall-Bogart movies:

To Have and Have Not (1945)...>

This was actually made in 1944.

I've seen a rumour bandied about that The Big Sleep was also produced in '44, but not released till 1946.

<Ed Trice: ....Was this when the 19 year old Lauren said to Bogie: "You know how to whistle don't ya? You just put your lips together and blow.">

Sure was.

perfidious: Someone had to mention Key Largo....

Here's a clip:

Sep-16-11  Novirasputin: f6 did seem weak but
i think black looks better if 24 ...Qxe6, and the trades leave white with 4 isolated pawns. So trading doesn't work and i don't see how the attack could continue with the white king stuck in the same place as the black one. Any computer analysis?
Sep-17-11  savagerules: NO WAY did Bacall play this game. Though she might have been a decent looker and actress in her early days she was an airhead in reality. Black was probably played by some actor friend of Bogart.
Premium Chessgames Member
HeMateMe: There are photos of the two playing chess, on movie sets. Why can't she play a decent game? Sharon Stone is a member of MENSA; she has an I.Q. over 150. I think that allows for all other possibilities to have credence.

Penguincw: Alekhine's gun sure is deadly in this game.
