plang: In game 12 of the Kramnik-Kasparov match three months earlier Kramnik had sacrificed the c-pawn with 12 Be2!? and the game had ended in a draw; here he varied with 12 Qb3. Anand's 18..Nb8 has not been repeated; 18..Qb7 and 18..Bd5 have each been tried on more than one occasion. Kramnik was critical of 23..Bf5? recommending instead 23..exf 24 Nd4..fxe 25 Re3 with White having compensation for the pawn. Kramnik vigorously pressed his kingside initiative until committing a positional blunder 27 e4? burying his king bishop; much stronger would have been 27 Bd5..Qd8 28 h4 and if 28..h6 then 29 h5 with a likely decisive attack. Instead the game was agreed drawn with Anand surprisingly making the offer with the better position.
