  plang: 5..Bd7 is an attempt to get out of the books; Benjamin felt 6 Bg5 would have been a better response. Zvagincev obtained sufficient counterplay after 14..h5! One of the ideas was the variation 15 gxh..d5 16 exd..Bxf5. Zvagincev felt that he would have had a solid advantage if he had played 17..Bxe3+ 18 Rxe3..Qb6 19 Kf2..hxg
20 a5..Qa7 21 Rc1..d5 22 Qg4..Rc6.
When Zvagincev missed that opportunity Benjamin was able to obtain a perpetual check. Zvagincev won this first round WC match in the tiebreaks after two draws. He went on to defeat two more US players, Kaidanov and Seirawan in the next two rounds also in tiebreaks before losing to Dreev in round 4.
