perfidious: If this was a 'normal variation', what is regarded as being an offbeat line?

fredthebear: What's 'normal' in an abnormal French Defense?

My research found 1.e4 e6 2.d4 was considered 'normal', a hint that things go off-beat from there. Black still might play 2...d5, but certainly not 3...c5.

This game is really a Delayed Owen Defense.

fredthebear: Before I get too excited, these two players are rather unknown (unknown being a euphemism).
