de Vere

of our favorite database?
Aug-18-04  sneaky pete: <checkpat> Some games with 3... Bb4 4.exd5 exd5 are listed as C01. Steinitz vs Winawer, 1867 is the first recorded instance where Winawer plays this defence. Very unlikely that he invented it, his first recorded games are from the Paris 1867 tournament and 3... Bb4 had been played 6 years before by Kolisch. See Paulsen vs Kolisch, 1861 (21th match game) and Paulsen vs Kolisch, 1861 (27th matchgame) played in November, 1861. There is also a game Paulsen vs Blackburne, November 25, 1861, filed under C15 (white played 4.Bd3 ..)(I forgot to make note of the gid). A game Paulsen vs De Vere, December 1861, won by Paulsen, from a blind simul, is missing in the database.
Apr-06-06  DeepBlade: Oh GOD! The irony...

GrahamClayton: De Vere's capture of the knight with 12...♕xd4 is a much better move than 12...♕xa1 - by staying in the middle of the board, the Queen is able to construct a mating with the Knight after 16...♘d4, which forces Winawer's resignation.
