Mar-08-13  abstract: Black can win a whole by 29.. Rxb1, but 30 Qe8+ leads to inevitable draw by perpetual checks so 29.. Qxb5 is a nice puzzle move.

plang: 14..Na7 had been played against Shirov in a 2001 Simultaneous Exhibition; 14..a4 was new. Lputian considered 15 bxc..Qxb2 16 Nxa4..Rxa4 17 cxb..Qc3+ 18 Nd2..0-0 19 Rb1..Rd4 to be unclear with Black having compensation for the exchange. 18 Rd1?! seems ineffective; Psakhis mentioned the pawn sacrifice 18 Ne2!?as an alternative. The position would have been dynamically equal after 24 Nxe6; instead after 24 Rd3?! Black continued to build an initiative on the queenside. Lputian thought that 34 Kg1..Re4 35 Rxe6..Kf7 36 Rf6+..Kg7 37 Ra6..Rxa5 38 Rxa4 would have offered better drawing chances than the game continuation did. After 37 Rxg6? White was lost; better would have been 37 Kf3..Rxe5 38 Rxg6..d4 39 Rb6..d3 40 Rb1..h4 41 Rd1..Rd5 42 Ke3..Kf6 though Black would have had a big edge (if 42 Rxd3?..f4+! 43 Ke2..f3 and wins). Grischuk, presumably in time pressure, may have missed 39..Kf7! when allowing the simplification to a pawn ending. 40 Kf5..d4 41 Ke4..h4 would have been winning for Black.
