plang: 10..Bg6 was a new (and very cautious) move; 10..0-0 is normally played. 13..f5?! was an extreme way of preventing e4; Kasparov was sceptical recommending 13..0-0 while Korchnoi thought the move was interesting. Black needed to avoid 13..N7b6? 14 Nxd5..Nxd5 15 Bxd5..cxd 16 Nb6. 15 Bxd5! started an attack on the dark squares aroung Black's king. 16..Nb8? was a serious error; 16..Nb6 (16..Nf6? 17 Nxc6..bxc 18 Rxa7 would win for White) 17 Rfc1..a6 was necessary though Black still would have had to be careful as White would have had a promising initiative. 20..a6? would have been refuted by 21 Ne6.

Korchnoi's technique in the endgame was impeccable and instructive.
