Aug-23-06  EmperorAtahualpa: What's the continuation? 58...Kh4 59.Rxh3 Kxh3 60.Nf4+ 61.Kh4 e4?

  tpstar: <EmperorAtahualpa> The easy way is to trade down like you said = 59. Kh4 Rxh3+! 60. Kxh3 Nf4+ 61. Kg4 Nxh5 62. Kxh5 Kf7 with a won K&P endgame.

The devious way is to play 59. Kh4 Rg2 and White is in Zugzwang. If 60. Nf4 exf4 avoids the Super-Rook.

Aug-23-06  islero: <62. Kxh5 Kf7 with a won K&P endgame.> Very true. In addition, black wins even after the worst alternative 62...Kh7: 63 Kg4 Kg7 64 Kf3 Kf7 65 Ke4 Kf8! zugzwang:

66 Kd5 Kg7 67 Ke4 Kh6

66 Ke3 (f3, d3) Ke7 67 Ke4 Kd6

tpstar: For K&P endgames, a protected passed Pawn is an easy win since the defending King cannot stray outside The Square, while the superior side can gain the Opposition through a timely Pawn push. After 62 ... Kf7:

Best play is 63. Kg4 (63. Kh6? e4) Ke7 64. Kf3 Kd6 65. Ke4 Kc5 66. Ke3 (66. Kd3 Kd5 67. Ke3 e4 68. Kf4 Kd4) Kd5 67. Kd3:

Black wins with 67 ... e4+ 68. Ke3 Ke5 69. Ke2 Kxf5 70. Ke3 Ke5 etc.
