Kibitzer's Corner
May-04-03  Rookpawn: When Morphy says, "For comments on the opening moves, see the fourth game of the series," the game indicated is La Bourdonnais vs MacDonnell, 1834
Aug-03-03  yoniker: yoniker: It is all wrong!
In the 40th move it says "if 44..kd8 45.Ra8 mate" and it is not true. Black cannot mate! Did he dring sth before writing this?
Sep-08-03  fukui: Was the above post intended for a different game? At move 40 it says, "40...Rf1 41.Rxg3 Rxg1+ 42.Kxg1 Bxg3 and mates next move," which is correct.

waddayaplay: No , look at the notes for move 42. They seem wrong. Ra8 isn't mate..
Nov-11-03  Calli: The score is messed up. It should be 39...Rf2 (not f7) and then 41...Rf1. Morphy's note then ends in Rd7 mate. Whoever translated this from English descriptive was the drunk one.
Jun-02-04  Prophylaxis: Chessgames.com needs to change it then.

chessgames.com: There is definitely something erroneous here, but the idea that 39...Rf2 was played is just speculation. Somebody should check out chesslab.com or chessbase.com or newinchess.com for a second opinion.

prn: chesslab.com also has Rf2. The other two sites do not have the game (or any other LaBourdonnais-MacDonnell games).
Jun-29-05  Rory O Rion: 35. And Nxg5 is convincing: should White accept Qxg5. Black makes certain with 36. Bf4..!

Richard Taylor: Some of the analysis seems wrong but it is interesting - the analysis maybe for other moves (it has been "translated" I presume from the old system) - eg the line Qa5+ Qd7 bb5 c6 e6 is not such an easy win but something else must have be meant - Morphy hardly drank did he? Rf1 is good as a litle test! very nice - but they missed it - easy to do OTB
Jun-29-05  sneaky pete: <Richard Taylor> Analyses is right but the gamescore is still corrupted. Black did not play 41... Ref8 (the <e> is a remnant of previous edition of score with 39... Rf7 instead of the actually played 39... Rf2) but 41... Rf1 after which Morphy's note makes perfect sense.

This second mistake follows in consequence of the first one. With English descriptive 39... RB7 misread as 39... Rf7, after 40... Qf4 on move 41 no rook can go to f1, so English descriptive 41... RB8 is misinterpreted as one of the rooks (Re8 or the non-existing Rf7) being transferred to f8, and the now completely discombobulated descriptive-to-algebraic-transcriber desperately gambled 41... Ref8 might have been played.

My sincere apologies for writing a so comprehensive kibitz with so many polysyllabic words.

Sep-19-08  Cactus: After move nine, Morphy says "c3 would have been preferable" does he mean c6?
Oct-13-08  I Offer You A Resign: Ra8 doesn't mate, but Rd7# does!
Oct-13-08  sneaky pete: From Morphy's original annotation to black's move 42, the part between brackets: if K-Q1 White R mates. It's again only the d-to-a transcriber who interprets this as Ra8#. And yes, on 9... Kf8 Morphy writes: Black might have played P-B3 (... c6) with safety.
Mar-01-09  just a kid: Boy,Mcdonnell had a way with win "uncorrect" openings
Mar-04-09  WhiteRook48: did you use incorrect English on purpose <just a kid>?
Mar-04-09  just a kid: Maybe.
Feb-01-12  Knight13: <15... Ke8> I believe Black played that move instead of ... Nxf5 because he wanted to play 16... Nd5, as well as to move his king away from the line with the queen, and head over to the Queenside, which is safer and doesn't cramp his rook on h8.
Feb-02-12  WiseWizard: Why not 45. Qh2#?

  WannaBe: Because 45...Qb7##
Feb-03-12  sneaky pete: There is no proof that 44.Nxb8 Bd4 (overlooking 44... Qh2#) was actually played. William Greenwood Walker (1836) concludes with 43. R. takes Q

and wins, and so does La Stratégie (1874). 44.Nxb8 Bd4 may be an invention of Bachmann, who republished the games from the Match of the Century in the early 1920s.

Feb-04-12  Knight13: 11...Bxe6 12. Ng5 Bd7 13. Qf3+ Nf6 is okay for Black. But 13. Qh5+ Ng6 14. Bd3 N8e7 15. Bg5 and Black is in some trouble.
Feb-10-12  rannewman: arr, in the finel postion black misses mate in one. McDonell was a real patzer, looking at their match I am quite shocked each time La Baourdonnais loses a game..guess he wasn't that good either.
