Rf7 instead of the actually played 39... Rf2) but 41... Rf1 after which Morphy's note makes perfect sense. This second mistake follows in consequence of the first one. With English descriptive 39... RB7 misread as 39... Rf7, after 40... Qf4 on move 41 no rook can go to f1, so English descriptive 41... RB8 is misinterpreted as one of the rooks (Re8 or the non-existing Rf7) being transferred to f8, and the now completely discombobulated descriptive-to-algebraic-transcriber desperately gambled 41... Ref8 might have been played. My sincere apologies for writing a so comprehensive kibitz with so many polysyllabic words. |
