Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-12-03  PVS: In game seven, Kramnik got a passed pawn with 24.e5 and later gave up the exchange, but Shirov, playing black, was content to go into a drawish ending and preserve his 1-0 lead in the match.

plang: Kramnik's first three Whites were draws in the Gruenfeld Exchange so he tried a different variation in game 7. Gelfand had played 12..c5 against Kramnik in a draw at Dos Hermanas 1996. 15 b3 was new; 15 cxd had been played previously. Shirov's active defense neutralized Kramnik's imposing center and allowed him to achieve a fairly easy draw.
