  al wazir: What was the point of 19...f4 ? I think black needs to defend more actively with 19...Nc7.

If now 20. Qxb7, then 20...Rab8 21. Qc6 (21. Qxa7 Nxd5) Ne8 22. Qd7 Nf6. If 20. Qd7, then 20...Nxd5, and now not 21. Bxd6 because of 21...Rd8.

  morfishine: <FSR> I've always admired your inclination to make every attempt to submit quality games for GOTD consideration, unlike numerous others who could care less about game quality

Quality first, game title second, should be the agenda

Nice job!

  Messiah: Terrible pun!
Oct-17-20  Brenin: Nice game, but where I come from people tend to say "all over bar the shouting". I believe it originates in the counting of votes, and the shouting when the result is declared.
Oct-17-20  goodevans: <al wazir: What was the point of 19...f4 ? I think black needs to defend more actively with 19...Nc7.>

<19...f4 20.Nh4 Qc2 21.Rxf4> does seem to be where it all starts to go wrong for black with the white R joining the attack. It subsequently played a critical part in the dramatic ending.

As to why black wanted to play ...f4, Maybe he saw that if he doesn't advance the pawn then it will be lost to 20.Nh4. Or maybe he just wanted to make threats of his own with 20...Qc2.

So does <19...f4> work if <20.Nh4> is followed by <20...Qg4>? Well, no because <21.h3> forces black to abandon the P (<21...Qg3? 22.Nf5> or <21...Nc7 22.Qc4 Qg3? 23.Nf5>).

So what of <19...Nc7>? As well as the attacking lines you've analysed, white also has the more defensive <20.Qb3>. But then <20...f4> works for black because <21.Nh4 Qg4 22.h3 Qg3> buys time by threatening to trade Qs and win the d-pawn. So, yes <19...Nc7> is indeed better.

Oct-17-20  Brenin: <al wazir>, <goodevans>: Other possible motivations for 19 ... f4, in addition to those suggested above:

a) to deny White the retreat Qd3 after Nc7;

b) to play Bd4+ and Be3, blocking the R on the e-file and leaving the B on e7 hanging.

All plausible, but I agree, Nc7 first would have been safer. A pity, as I thought Black had played well up to that point.

In Britain, yes, although <but> was the original form. Searching on British and American newspaper archives, the earliest <bar> I found was 1850, but <but> dates to, at least, 1834, when there are suddenly half a dozen examples - all British, all used in the context of horseracing, and all in the form of <all over but shouting>. And of those, all but one uses actual quote marks, suggesting the phrase came from a definite source.

  FSR: <morfishine> Thanks. I agree with that philosophy. You see a lot of crap becoming GOTD just for the sake of some lame pun.
