Jul-10-09  just a kid: Is 28.Nd7+ also good?
Jul-10-09  20MovesAhead: yes just a kid 28 Nd7 is good

maybe morphy was hoping for ... Qc3 Rg8 ke7 Nd5 winning b's queen OR 28...Qh3 Qxh3 followed by Nd7 winning piece with no counterplay for B. in the game morphy wins exchange only, but with virtually no counterplay for B.

Feb-10-11  geneven: I recommend the book Paul Morphy: A Modern Perspective by Valeri Beim (I'm reading it on my Kindle). It discusses the main game here at some length.
Oct-21-11  Mozart72: Morphy and Loewenthal have the same material advantage value: 1.4, and Morphy won.
Jan-12-13  chesssalamander: What a great victory for Morphy! So young, and to win against a master in the end game bc of king position!

And the history! Lowenthal might have lied about being shut out by an untrained kid? Makes for great reading!

Jul-08-13  Xeroxx: epic game.

offramp: Lowenthal: Hey, Paul! How did this game end?

Morphy: I won it.

Lowenthal: You sure dude?

Morphy: Yup.

Jan-29-16  juanhernandez: Be slow in choosing a friend & slower while loosing
May-26-16  The Kings Domain: Good game. Impressive win by the 13-year old Morphy, always one step ahead of his older foe. This game is a mainstay in Morphy bios and with good reason.
Oct-19-16  talhal20: This 13 year old genius was too much for J Low

offramp: A lot of people don't believe me when I say that Löwenthal means <Lion valley>.

But to those people I say this:

There will always be the doubters and the naysayers, the fearmongers and the rumourmongers and even the ironmongers. There's not many things you can mong. But in the end the truth will survive, not fake news, and the nattering nabobs of nihilism will lie trampled on the floor.

Gentlemen, I thank you.

Fish?

Aug-27-17  morfishine: <offramp> You're not lion, it really does translate, loosely, to 'Lion Valley'

I bow to thee oh great one

offramp: There is also Coster. But I don't know what a costermonger does.
Aug-27-17  The Kings Domain: A game by the great Morphy is always a treat, the best a priceless gem wrapped up in myth. Although no "Game of the Century" like his great American heir would play at the same age a century later, this showcases the game's first prodigy in his outstanding strengths.
Aug-27-17  sudoplatov: Edo ratings has Morphy rated at 2716 and Löwenthal at 2501. They were ranked #1 and #13 respectively. (At #2 Edo has von der Lasa at 2692.) This game is of pretty high quality.
Aug-27-17  Sally Simpson: 28.Rg2 wins but I'm trying to figure out what ghost the young Morphy saw here.

by not playing 28.Nd7+ and 29, Nxc5. picking up a piece and still has a winning attack on the board. Possibly 29....Qxc3 which would hit the unprotected Knight and b2 Rook. But White has, depending on where the BK goes on move 28, various ways to counter that shot.

Or maybe by playing 28.Rg2 entering an endgame the exchange up guaranteed he could not lose and could win at leisure.

Sergeant here

suggests 28.Qxe6 as a better move and nothing else. Presumably 28.Qxe6 fxe6 29. Nh5+ winning back the Queen a piece up.

Aug-27-17  morfishine: <Sally Simpson> Yes, you are correct sir. The delightful aspect of a Morphy combination is usually it has a simple, transparent nature that leaves us breathless; while other Morphy combinations are so deep, that we shake our heads since we can't comprehend what's going on

fearlessone: Moves 41 through 43 Rxc5 each time is winning according to stockfish. I got no credit for any of them, think the computer is outdated.

fearlessone: I saw the Qxe6 mentioned by Sergeant and Stockfish agrees it is +3.50 on Stockfish but again got no credit - not even a point for the move!

Feb-02-23  Honest Adin Reviews: Yo,, SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG... One of these games is fake, according to official biographies, Lowenthal had a draw in 2 games match!

Yo... is this game for real (not official for sure), what happened with the link for the game which ended in draw... hey, dont just show one get their ass whooped if there was redemption!

Lowenthal was at one time third strongest player in Europe or better?

Feb-02-23  Honest Adin Reviews: according to the Book of the First American Chess Congress - Morphy won 2 and drew 1, this is direct and best source!
