Jun-22-04 | | Whitehat1963: Morphy gets pushed a little into a long ending, but he handles it too easily. |
Jul-14-04 | | rover: 29.Qe5 was a mistake. White abandons his active position to defend. Instead after 29.Rxf7 black has to go for a perpetual after 29...Rxf1+ 30.Kxf1 (if 30.Kh2?! Qxc7 31.Rxc7 Rxf2 32.Rxa7 Rc2 black wins a pawn. It's still a draw though) Qb1+ 31.Ke2 Qe4+ and now all white has to do is to avoid being checked from c4. |
Jan-10-06 | | morpstau: whitehat your right and morphy sacs one of his 4 pawns and obtians a winning passed c pawn to bring home the win |
Jan-17-06 | | savuflorin1983: The position after white's 11th move I saw (if I remember well) in a game played by Ljubojevic in the 80s, and the GM he was playing gainst, set up a nice combination starting with 11. ...Nxf2 12. Kxf2 Nh4+ 13. g3. Could anyone tell me what game was it ? |
Jan-18-06 | | Calli: <savuflorin1983> Are you thinking of Ljubojevic vs S Makarichev, 1975 ? |
Mar-21-07 | | capablancakarpov: After 68.Rc7 Nalimov tablebases say that is draw. |
May-14-07 | | Rory O Rion: Q? After Morphy's 26 . .(R-d1): what if White plays 27-(RxB-f7)?
Notice: this position repeats when Morphy plays 28 . .(R-d1): Are these moves correct, or am i missing something? |
Jun-16-08 | | crwynn: 26...Rd1 is a clever idea, after 27.Rf7? Rf1 28.Kf1? Qb1 29.Ke2 Qc2 this is not a draw, 31...Qc4+ is inevitable: 30.Ke1 Qc1, 30.Ke3 Qc3. But 28.Kh2 probably leads to a drawn 3-vs.-2 rook ending. |
Nov-10-08 | | gambitfan: gtm to do very soon |
Aug-04-09 | | MethodMan: 26. Rxf7. |
Oct-01-09 | | josejoasm: rover, Rory O Rion and MethodMan are right: Rxf7 instead of Qc8+ in the 27 move is the best movement though blacks still can draw, but white should never lose this game. Unfortunately Loewenthal proves in this game that he was a poor player, unfit for a super player like Morphy. |
Mar-16-11 | | stst: Morphy could exchange Q at 26...QxQ,then 27. RxQ Rd1.
With same color B, probably the game would be drawn.
But yes, obviously W missed the golden opportunity at 27. RxB Morphy's games are usually short and brilliant, this one showed he's also superb in endgames. |
Dec-11-11 | | Lashab: I wondered why 27. Rxf7 wasn't played by Lowenthal. Then looked at the variations and it's a draw after the reply Rxf1+ and Kxf1. King gets chased up the board by Queen and it's perpetual. Then I checked through the engine and it's completely drawn position if white King recaptures. And if it doesn't, then it's slight edge to black. |
Mar-30-13 | | Boomie: 30. Re8+ sets up a perpetual for white. However after losing 2 of the first 3 games, (Let It Be) Loewenthal probably thought he needed to win this game. |
Jan-29-14
 | | wwall: 62...Re8+ should have drawn. Black wins after 62...Kb3 (or 62...Kb4) 63.Rb7+ Ka2 64.Ra7+ Kb1 65.Rb7+ Kc1 66.Kd3 c2 67.Ke2 Re8+ 68.Kg2 Re5 69.Rc7 Kd2 70.Rd7+ Kc3 71.Rc7+ Kd3 72.Rd7+ Kc4 73.Rc7+ Rc5 and Black queens his pawn. |
Nov-09-14 | | joddon: looks to me almost like a world championship brawl!! |
Oct-04-22 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Morphy certainly looked willing to draw, as makes sense with the black pieces, especially given that other comments suggest this was in a match he was leading. |
