Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-10-06  morpstau: i feel bad for johann in this game he blows the victory by allowing perpetual. Morphys youthful spirit pays off against his rival in this battle.

Honza Cervenka: 39.Qh8 is awful blunder. After 39.Qh5 (covering Pg6 and attacking Pf5) 39...Qc5 (The Queen has to cover f8; 39...Ke6 allows 40.Qh8 as Pg6 is not under attack and black has no unpleasant check.) 40.Qh1 covering check on g1 and activating the Queen (40...Qd6? 41.Qd1) would have won easily.

InspiredByMorphy: <Honza Cervenka> 39. Qh5 Qf6 and the white's queen has limited options (the only decent of which was the text move Qh8) . If instead white plays 39.Bh5 then ...Qd3+ 40.Kg2 Qd2+ 41.Qf2 and white wins. (If 41. ...Qxf2+ 42.Kxf2 Kd7 and white's king and bishop attack the queenside pawns).

  Honza Cervenka: <InspiredByMorphy> 39. Qh5 Qf6 40. Qg5 forces exchange of Queens (40...Qd6 41.Qxf5+ is evidently hopeless) and the endgame after 40...Qxg5+ 41.fxg5 is unfortunately easily won for white thanks to Pa2 (without it the endgame looks drawish despite the extra Bishop because white cannot expel black King from e7-f8, at least I don't see it): 39.Qh5 Qf6 40.Qg5 Qxg5 41.fxg5 Ke7 42.Bc6 b4 43.Bxa4 c5 44.Bb3 Kf8 45.Kf3 Ke7 46.Kxf5 etc.
