Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-28-07  YouRang: Interesting game. After white played 88. Ra2, black found himself facing this position:

Clearly, with Ra8# looming, he has 2 choices:

(1) 88...Kd8 - get in front of white's pawn

(2) 88...Kf8 - stay away from white's pawn

Black, went with option (1) 88...Kd8, which looks quite plausible, but it was the wrong choice. The rook will force the black king to c7, which buys a tempo when the d-pawn gets to d6 with check. In turn, the rook gets to c7 with check, which buys time for the pawn to advance to d7, guarding the rook and winning.

By playing 88...Kf8, the king avoids these checks, and has time to get his rook behind the pawn (via g1) and draws.

Aug-28-07  YouRang: <In turn, the rook gets to c7 with check> I meant, the rook gets to c8 with check.

Yes, for examople 88...Kf8 89. d5 Rg1 90. d6 Re1+ 91. Kd7 Rd1 92. Ra8+ Kf7 93. Kc7 Ke6! 94. Re8+ Kf5 95. d7 g5 and black Passer should be enough to draw against white Rook once black sacs his Rook for d-Pawn.

Jun-18-18  Omnipotent00001: 84. d4 is a draw move
