plang: 19 Bd2 had been played in the draw Piket-Khalifman Dortmund 2000; 19 a4 was new. Dreev was probably the main expert in the Meran variation at this time and he would have expected Shirov to have something prepared for the game. White would have had good compensation for the pawn after 20..Kb7 21 Bd3..Ra8 22 22 Bd2..Be5 23 Rad1. Perhaps 25..Kb8 would have been an improvement. Black was lost after 28..Be5?; better would have been 28..Qxc4 29 Bd3..Qc6 30 Rfc1 with some edge for White.
