|Feb-04-13|| ||newzild: A good old fashioned slug-fest.|
|Feb-04-13|| ||Abdel Irada: Poor Portisch.
Throughout this rout of a game, the unhappy (grand)master remained always on his heels as unmerciful disaster followed fast and followed faster, till all the dirges of his hopes this melancholy burden bore and he could parry all the threats....
Well, you know what comes next. ;-)
|Feb-04-13|| ||SuperPatzer77: Chess folks, Ravn sounds like Raven - the Baltimore Ravens win the 47th Super Bowl championship!!! |
Go Ravens Go (Ravn) LOL
|Feb-04-13|| ||chessworm: Instead of 34... b6, what if black had played 34... ♖h2+ ?|
If white plays ♖xh2, ♕ will retake the rook with a check and against an undefended King/Rook/Bishop Queen+Rook combo can atleast gain a piece. For eg. 35. ♖xh2 ♕xh2+ 36. ♔f1 will cost the rook.
If the rook is not taken and the king moves to 35.♔g1 ♖xh1+ 36. ♗xh1 ♕h2+ 37. ♔f1
What did I miss here?
|Feb-04-13|| ||Cyphelium: <chessworm> After 34. -♖h2+ 35. ♖xh2 ♕xh2+ 36. ♔f1 b6 37. ♖xb6+ axb6 38. ♕xb6+, it looks like white will pick up enough pawns to have a winning endgame. For example 38.- ♔c8 39. ♕c6+ ♔b8 40. ♕xd6+ ♔a8 41. ♕a6+ ♔b8 42. ♕b6+ and now either 42.- ♔a8 allows 43. d6+ or 42.- ♔c8 allows 43. ♕xc5+.|
|Feb-04-13|| ||Morten: "Ravn" in Danish does mean raven.|
|Feb-04-13|| ||morfishine: This nice win gave Ravn something to crow about|
|Feb-04-13|| ||Ratt Boy: <Morten>, "Ravn" does not need to mean "raven." It's a pun.|
|Feb-04-13|| ||rodchuck: Adbel: Nevermore?|
|Feb-04-13|| ||tjoff: <Ratt Boy> Whether it needs do so or not, it still does :-)|
|Feb-04-13|| ||Castleinthesky: Ravens triumph!|
|Feb-04-13|| ||kevin86: A Zany game;it looked like NEITHER player could save it.|
Are the NINERS undefeated in the Super Bowl? Quoth the Raven:"NEVERMORE"
|Feb-04-13|| ||FSR: I see what Robert Huebner meant when he told me at Chicago 1982 that it was absurd to talk about the Hübner Variation of the Nimzo-Indian, since Portisch had played the line before he did. <Way> before he did; Hübner was eight at the time of this game.|
|Feb-04-13|| ||5hrsolver: Wow!! I was with Portisch here when I saw the queen and two rooks battery on the h file. Apparently that was not enough even to draw.|
I have a fondness for this line of play. It reminds me of the 1972 World Championship match between Boris Spassky and the late Bobby Fischer, 5th game. Spassky vs Fischer, 1972. Which Bobby as black won.
It also reminds me of this other slugfest between Portisch and Eugene Torre of the Philippines at the 1982 Interzonal tournament to determine the world championship challenger. Its a 100 move game. The endgame here is awesome with Eugene fighting for the draw. E Torre vs Portisch, 1982. I am surprised to see on chessgames that Eugene leads their lifetime score by one win.

Portisch was hacked off about that, as well.

I can well understand that. However, looking at the statistics, I can see why Hübner got people a lot more excited about the variation than Portisch ever did. Through 1972, Portisch scored +1 =3 -2 as Black. True, he scored 2.5/3 as White in that period, but that didn't exactly help. Hübner OTOH scored +3 =2 -0. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

In the present game, today's GOTD, Black had a battery with all of his major pieces on the h-file, but lost. In today's POTD, M Perez Candelario vs Saleh Salman, 2012, White had such a battery and used it to force mate.
|Feb-04-13|| ||Phony Benoni: Apparently, Portisch was guilty of battery without assault.|
|Feb-04-13|| ||The Last Straw: This ugly stuff has happened to me before. I set up a gun against the opponents king, and am almos ready to start attacking... until my opponent suddenly busts my army. Chess is like this.|
|Feb-04-13|| ||Abdel Irada: <Phony Benoni: Apparently, Portisch was guilty of battery without assault.>|
Q.: Other than water, what do you need to perform ionic electrolysis?
A.: A salt and battery.

Ambiguous. Are you referring to the game or our conversation?
If the latter, perhaps "inane" would be a better adjective. At least I know *my* part in it is. ;-)
|Aug-10-19|| ||OhioChessFan: 40...Rxf2+ looks like an easy draw.|
|Aug-10-19|| ||Gregor Samsa Mendel: The Computer thinks that white blundered with 39 Rb1 (Qb8+ was winning) and that black could have won with 40..Qh3+.|
Games like this one show me just how little I understand chess.
|Aug-10-19|| ||OhioChessFan: If Portisch had 10 seconds to make his 40th move, I understand not wanting to risk the complications of Qh3+. But Rxf2+ should have been easy to find.|
