Interesting game. Fantastic moves! |

Nov-24-04 | | InspiredByMorphy: <Knight13> I agree this an interesting game. I wonder what Morphy would have played had black played 10. ...h6 ? |

 | | Chessical: Paul Morphy would be still well on top after:
<10...h6> 11.Qh5+! g6 12.Bxd5! Bg7 (12...gxh5? 13.Nf6#) 13.Bf7+ Kf8 14.Qe2 hxg5 (14...fxe4?! 15.Ne6+ Bxe6 16.Bxe6) 15.Nxg5 |

 | | Sneaky: Some historical background on this game from SBC's awesome site, http://batgirl.atspace.com/note5.html <Ernest Morphy sent this letter to Kieseritsky, then editor of La Régence. It was published in the January 1851 issue"I send you, herewith, a game of chess played on the 28th instant between Mr. R. [Eugene Rousseau] and the young Paul Morphy, my nephew, who is only twelve. This child has never opened a work on chess; he has learnt the game himself by following the parties played between members of his family. In the openings he makes the right moves as if by inspiration; and it is astonishing to note the precision of his calculations in the middle and end game. When seated before the chessboard, his face betrays no agitation even in the most critical position; in such cases he generally whistles an air through his teeth and patiently seeks for the combination to get him out of trouble. Further, he plays three or four severe enough games every Sunday (the only day on which his father allows him to play) without showing the least fatigue."> |

Dec-01-05 | | Chopin: Morphy strikes again. Another beautiful game. |
|
Aug-07-10 | | Elsinore: I know it was a friendly game, but Rousseau should have moved 12) Ke8. Morphy would have avoided a draw, probably. It's not Rousseau's job to make Morphy look good. That's what fathers are for. |

Aug-08-10 | | Shams: Morphy would look equally good after 12...Ke8 13.Qf7+ Kd7 14.dxe4, no? click for larger view |

Jul-17-15 | | saturn2: @Chessical: Paul Morphy would be still well on top after:
<10...h6> 11.Qh5+! g6 12.Bxd5! Bg7 (12...gxh5? ... What would white do after ..12 f5xNe4?
A.There is a check 13 Bf7 but the king escapes after another possible check 14 Be6+
B.13 Nf7 also does not prove useful, because Black takes the queen then. |

Jul-22-15 | | saturn2: @Chessical 14..hxg5 15.Qxh8 Nxg6 16.Qh7 Ne7 17.dxe4 winning In this variation white gets only R+2P for N+B. I think this one is best for black and he could have fought on. |
|
Jul-22-15 | | saturn2: By the way: R+2P for N+B is the immediate outcome of the exchange after 14..hxg5. Since black has taken the Ne4 before, he is a full piece ahead. |
|
Aug-06-15 | | saturn2: Probably after 10...h6 11.Qh5+ g6 12.Bxd5 fxe4 13. Bf7+ Kd7
14. Bxg6 is not the best because of the answer hxg5 as I wrote last time.
In a book by some Dr. Petrovic 14.Qg4+ is recommended. He gives as an example the line Kc7 15.Qxe4 with the threat 16 Qxe5+ forking King and rook on h8.
But dont ask me what happens if black plays ..14 Kd6. |
