Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-28-06  sigi: In NIC Yearbook 52 (1999) Sergey Ivanov published a theoretical article on the Tarrasch with 4.exd5 Qxd5.

"It contained wonderful pieces of analyses, but had one little flaw. (...) Ivanov had dedicated over half a page to this interesting try [18.Rad1] to avoid the main line 18.c3 and its myriad of possibilities. To date, Oleg Korneev's move had scored two wins in grandmaster games. Khalifman shows it has just one small drawback: it loses instantly."

plang: 18 Rad1? had been played a few times with success until Khalifman played the refutation 19..e5!; 19..Bd7 and 19..Qe5 had been played previously.

Lovely, and an object lesson in the old maxim, 'Trust, but verify!'.

Domdaniel: Khalifman also wrote about this game in the Chess Stars review of the year's theoretically important games.

Looking at it again, Zaw can't have been *that* weak. At least he knew when to resign.
