Chessical: Mackenzie chose to play for a massive K-side pawn advance against the Philidor/Giuoco Pianissimo in this match:

Mackenzie vs G MacDonnell, 1862

MacDonnell could have considered:

<8... Nxe4> 9. Nxe4 d5 10. Nxc6 bxc6 11. Qf3 dxc4 12. Rd1 Qe8 13. f5 f6 14. Be3 Rb8 with piece play compensating for the tripled pawns.

Or a slightly less radical approach:
<12... Be6> 13. Bxe6 fxe6 14. Rad1 Ng4 15. Bc1 g6.

MacDonnell never recovers from the disadvantages of the lack of space he is left with from the opening, and with <41 e5!> his position collapses.
