Sep-28-04  Whitehat1963: Great and fun example of the opening of the day!

wwall: 16...Ke8 loses quickly. Perhaps better is 16...Qh5 or 16...Qg5+.

If 17...Kf7 18.Bc4+.

Apr-02-12  Whitehat1963: Friday puzzle after 16...Ke8.
Oct-01-12  shakman: This can definitely make a puzzle...

10.Nb5 is an option to focus on weaknesses on c7 and d6

  fredthebear: 6...Ne7 is a dud.

6...Ne7 prevents the fork 7.Nd5, but apparently Black is supposed to allow Nd5, as 7...Qf7 would counter the threat gaining time on the unprotected Nd5 and clearing the f6-square. 7...Qf7 would allow Black to prepare castling short with ...Nf6 and ...Be7. Black's dark-squared bishop never gets off the ground, and Black never gets castled out of the center fire.

Thus, 7.Nd5 is a weak threat that would have improved Black's position, meaning 6...Ne7 was not necessary, or useful.

7.d5 proved to be a key constricting move.

White sacrifices both bishops shortly after castling to tear open the position for the mating attack. The White queen in the center gets much more done than does 7...Qg6, a common location for her majesty in Latvian Gambit lines. In fact, 6...Qg6 is the main line of this variation.

White can meet 6...Qg6 with 7.f3, 7.Ne3, 7.Be3, and 7.Bf4.
