Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-03-05  Runemaster: All rook endings are drawn, so the old saying goes, but here Short (outrating his opponent by 300 points) deliberately trades down to one with even material. It would be nice to be able to choose how to beat 2400 players.

I think an important stage of the game is move 33, when the pure rook ending is reached. White has better king position, and while Black is bringing his king out of the far corner, White can improve his rook placement and seize the 'c' file.

Perhaps a crucial factor in the win is that Black can't really try to contest the 'c' file himself with 34...Rc7. In that case, 35.Rc3 Rxc3 36.Kxc3 leaves White with a much better King in the K+P ending. the White king gets to c5 and then White can advance the 'c' pawn eventually establishing a central passed pawn, with the possibility of penetrating to Black's queenside pawns.

Meanwhile, Black's own kingside pawn majority is held in a clamp by White's pawns on e5 and g5.

All in all, a nice change of pace from Short.
