Jul-01-07  wouldpusher: Draw? He should have tried 13. Nxd6+, so that 13. ... cxd6 14. Bxe7 Kxe7, or 13. ... Qxd6 14. Qxd6 cxd6 15. Bxe7 Kxe7, etc.

Tobor's games in the database seems bugged.

Phony Benoni: <wouldpusher> Let's look at the resulting position after your second line, where the queens get exchanged as well:

White's idea in the Exchange Ruy Lopez is forcing a passed pawn on the kingside with his 4-3 pawn majority while Black's crippled 4-3 majority on the queenside cannot do so. Black's compensation is his pair of bishops.

In this position, White has given away his chances on the kingside without totally eliminating Black's bishop pair. He has saddled Black with a backward d-pawn, but it is easily protected and can be dissolved by preparing ...d5 at some point.

Black's king is also better posted for the endgame, and White has to consider if he should allow ...Bxf3.

If anything, I'd say Black's position is no worse than in the final position of the game, and may well be better.
