offramp: A strange blunder for Morphy to make, but he was probably losing anyway.

sneaky pete: Maybe not, Morphy claimed in the post-mortem 17... Nd7 is good for black.

sneaky pete: He may have been wrong. After 17... Nd7 18.dxc6? bxc4 black wins (.. Rab8+), but if 18.Bd3 .. I can find no defence against the threat 19.fxg6 fxg6 20.Bxg6 .. etc.

Black could have won earlier with 9... Qh4+ 10.g3 Nxg3 11.hxg3 .. (11.Nf3 Qe7+) 11... Qxg3+ 12.Kf1 Qxf4+ and 13... Qxc4.

Aug-15-05  ThaDoctor: Even not Morphy wins every game, well Kasparov made blunders to ??
Jan-10-06  morpstau: You got that straight doctor! Morphy plays alright but lets his drunkard opponent swindle him. You all know that morphy would have still won in the long run. I think this is the only game j.h.s. wins from Morphy out of 15!
Dec-17-06  shr0pshire: After all the people who ragged on Kramnik for overlooking a mate in one obviously didn't study this game.

Even the best have their off days.

chancho: <shr0pshire> You showed a game where Tal misses a mate in one and now Morphy. Good job in finding those games.
Dec-17-06  Rocafella: I don't think Morphy missed the mate, I think this was his train of thought: 'Hmm should I purposely lose this game, it might look a big suspicious if I keep winning, meh what the hell' 18 moves later...18.f6!
'Oh, wow, I didn't *wink* see that move *wink*, I resign.

fm avari viraf: Well, Chess is all about miss, blunders & what not. Even great Chess Masters have been a victim of such phenomena & Morphy supports the theory.

We don't have all the games, but I believe the overall score was 23-1. Of course, Schulten had to be pretty good not to get odds from Morphy, even in 1857.

Soltis wrote a very funny column about Schulten back in the 1980s, reprinted in <Karl Marx Plays Chess>. He got crushed by the best in Europe and America for 30 years. Apart from today's puzzle and the Morphy games, there is this early classic: J Schulten vs Kieseritzky, 1844

And from the other end of his career: G Neumann vs J Schulten, 1865

Schulten was a wine merchant who crossed the Atlantic at least once a year. After one of his brilliant losses he said (according to Soltis), "It's a real pleasure to lose such a game. Beautiful! Beautiful!" So he may not have been a great master, but he was definitely a good sport.

I think <Marvol> described his style pretty well on his page: <Going through his games you got to admire his want to go forward. In most of his games he makes only a few moves "backward", usually he throws his pieces at the opponent like... like...

...like boomerangs, since usually they come backfiring at him>

Jul-22-07  Morphyisgod: can someone please tell me which game it is that tal missed mate in one?
Feb-18-08  Knight13: LOL White missed f6 this guy SUCKS LOL even 1000 rateds would see this! What's his name, Morphy? I bet I could take this guy in less than 30 moves.

(Hey put the hammer down I was just kidding I swear please... No!! Don't!! I wanna live!!)

Dec-20-08  WhiteRook48: What the!? A mess-up from a player this good? I wonder if Morphy lost this game on purpose just not to get the people suspicious about winning Anderssen, Harrwitz, and all those other guys.
Dec-20-08  WhiteRook48: Oh, and I saw f6, and i'm 1000 rated.
Dec-23-08  WhiteRook48: One can only imagine what happened after this game... "Morphy lost! Morphy lost! Oh what a blunder! He blindly grabbed an en prise bishop like a beginner not knowing any g7 weakness!" is what one of the players would say nearby. Schulten, meanwhile, is staring at his King while Morphy hears taunts.
Dec-23-08  morphchess1857: This is the one and only game won by Schulton vs. Morphy and I believe its a fake!

SatelliteDan: Did anything about Morphy doing drugs? Did he know Edger Allen Poe?
Jan-13-09  WhiteRook48: do you have any proof that this game is a fake??
Feb-01-09  WhiteRook48: how did Morphy miss that?
Feb-28-09  WhiteRook48: 13...g6 is odd
Apr-02-09  WhiteRook48: it's NOT a mate in 1. It's a mate in 3. 18...Qb5+ 19 Kc1 Qb1+ 20 Kxb1 cxd5 21 Qg7#
May-06-09  Marmot PFL: Probably a blindfold game.
May-06-09  Calli: Keypusher is correct. Morphy agreed to play Schulten at the end of Nov 1857. Schulten was not in New York during the chess congress (Oct-early Nov). Morphy agreed to even games probably out of respect for Schulten having known and played all the greats since the thirties. Morphy won 23 of the 24 and Lawson speculates that he lost this one due to the "monotony induced by so many wins".
Aug-18-09  chessenthus: After f5,Morphy became greedy,missing f6.Black should have played 17...Qd8!!
