Jun-30-05 | | Knight13: After 22. h5!! Black is hopeless.
<25. Rh6#> The final position is interesting. It all started with 17. Nf6+. |
May-28-07 | | imatos: There's an error in the diagram on the front page! It shows an additional white knight on f3. I hope that the cg.com staff will fix it by the time you're reading this. :-) But with or without this knight, this is the hardest Monday in quite a while. Not only are there several plausible-looking moves, but you also have to see that h6 is in fact undefended because the knight on f5 is pinned. I'd say this is normally Tuesday material. |
May-28-07 | | chessmoron: Still a pretty easy Monday puzzle. Qxh7+...first check, hxg6++....double check and Rh6 mate |
May-28-07 | | RookFile: I personally think this version is a little prettier: J Curdo vs R Byrne, 1994 |
May-28-07 | | Kneesocks: I got this one! I saw that after 25. Rh6+, the knight couldn't take the rook, 'cause it's mate! |

 | | al wazir: 23. Bxf5 wins. If 23...exf5, then 24. hxg6, and the ♕ mates. If 23...gxf5, then 24. g5, and mate is again inevitable. If neither ♙ captures, material is even, but white just keeps chopping away at the king-side ♙s, playing 24. hxg6, etc. But today is Monday, so I looked for a ♕ sac. 23. Qxh7+ is the obvious choice. |
May-28-07 | | dzechiel: This is a Monday puzzle. Normally white would play 23 hxg6, but the white queen is under attack by the knight. So..., it must be: 23 Qxh7+ Kxh7 24 hxg6+ Kxg6 25 Rh6# (note that the knight that attacked our queen before is now pinned by the bishop on c2). A pretty ending, but I think a little tougher than most Mondays. |
May-28-07 | | PositionalTactician: Hmm, a nice but rather easy puzzle. The first move is obvious, since the queen is trapped. A slight problem I faced is that I did not see that the knight on f5 is pinned, so I thought White cannot play Rh6 |
May-28-07 | | Aware: Anybody else see the extra knight on f3 on the front page? |
May-28-07 | | Rubenus: <Aware> Yes, I do. It was even part of my solution! I thought: 25. Nh4+ and 26. Nxf5 Kg6 27. Rh6# but the text mate is shorter and better. |
May-28-07 | | willyfly: I see the ♘ on f3 in the diagram on the main page. But did anybody notice that this game started with the ♕'s ♘ missing from b1? |
May-28-07 | | vibes43: It took a long time for me to visualize that the Knight would be pinned by the distant Bishop. Good puzzle - harder than recent Mondays but better for me. |
May-28-07 | | malthrope: White to play... Tarrasch vs Schroeder
click for larger viewYep it's there! Since this was a knights odds game where Tarrasch exchanged his sole KN with Nf3 > Nd2 > Ne4 > Nf6+ etc. Me thinks CG.com put it there on purpose to confuse us to become sidetracked and analyze the possible variation - 1. Qxh7+ Kxh7 2. hxg6++ Kxg6 and now like magic to throw in 3. Nh4+ (instead of the immediate mate with 3. Rh6#) 3... Kh7 (of course if 3... Kh5 then 4. Bd1#) 4. Nxf5+ Kg6 and now finally 5. Rh6# (or for you 'double check' specialist 5. Ne7#). ~lol~ ;-) - Mal PS: Beware of Chess Varients (000) and Monday chess puzzles! ~lol~ |

 | | Gilmoy: Saw it instantly -- but I was tipped off :) Not a day earlier, I was revisiting Tal vs Ulf Andersson, 1976, where <Shadout Mapes> [kibitz 1] startled me (again!) with his comment <27.Rd4!! Qc6 the obvious 28.Qxh7+! mates.> Then I was kicking myself for not seeing earlier that it satisfies the Anastasia pattern -- the 3-deep g-wall acts like a Rook, so it's [3 line movers vs. 1 pawn], which reduces by force to [2 vs. 0], which is matish. Then this puzzle has exactly the same 3-deep g-wall with a P on f6, and Qh6. Deja vu! The pinned Nf5 is a variation, but that's easy to check after you see the Q-sac. |
May-28-07 | | RookFile: <al wazir: 23. Bxf5 wins.> Agreed, this also forces checkmate in short order. Of course, Qxh7+ is shorter and prettier. |
May-28-07 | | goodevans: Monday's = Q-sack, OK. But I reckon this was harder than the average Monday. Hopefully MAJ will give us the benefit of his ongoing ratings. I spent a minute or so looking at 23 Qxh7+ Kxh7; 24 Bxf6 before it dawned on me that after 24 hxg6+ Kxg6 the black N is pinned so there's no need to take it. I see <vibes43> had the same problem. Perhaps this is easy to see when playing through on a board, but it's not so obvious from the initial diagram. So, IMO harder than usual for a Monday which made it more enjoyable for me. |
May-28-07 | | prinsallan: Once you learn the main-theme for Mondays here on cg.com they always are very easy: Monday = Queensac = rest is kind of easy :P |
May-28-07 | | Larsker: <prinsallan: Once you learn the main-theme for Mondays here on cg.com they always are very easy: Monday = Queensac = rest is kind of easy :P> Yea, maybe a little variation would be good. |
May-28-07 | | uuft: Pinned knight on Monday ain't part of the program, CG! I knew I was missing something, and I clearly did - hitting me softly with a pawn all day is my punishment. :( |
May-28-07 | | Tactic101: Good Monday puzzle. |
May-28-07 | | openingspecialist: I saw Qxh7+ Kxh7 hxg6+ Kxg6 Rh6# but then saw the knight on f5 and went oh oh. But then I saw 3 seconds later it was pinned and just double checked that the line was forced. I love playing white against scandinavian because its so easy to end up with a pawn up or advantage. I find e4 has simple tactics that d4 shares also but d4 as some might argue the same with e4 is drawish in d4 d5 positions(eg slav QGA QGD etc). I like a tactical scotch gambit and prefer to avoid Ruy Lopez with e4 e5 Nf3 Nc6 (it's hillarious when people play f6 here) d4 exd4 Bc4!? Nf6 0-0 Nxe4 Re1 d5 Bxd5 Qxd5 Nc6. Tactics is all in whites favour. There are many sidelines in this variation that are a pawn down for white but ample compensation is provided. |
May-28-07 | | controlaltdelete: the knight on f3 isn't there anymore in the actual game, but according to the frontpage one could play Nh4+ after the Queen sack right .. or does the manouver Kh5-g4 save black? |
May-28-07 | | malthrope: <controlaltdelete: the knight on f3 isn't there anymore in the actual game, but according to the frontpage one could play Nh4+ after the Queen sack right .. or does the manouver Kh5-g4 save black?> Did you overlook my post (with diagram) given just below? I analyzed that line with 'tongue-in-cheek' and after 1. Qxh7+ Kxh7 2. hxg++ Kxg6 3. Nh4+ for if 3... Kh5 then just 4. Bd1# ;-) - Mal |
May-28-07 | | WarmasterKron: Curses. I eventually saw the whole mating line, then saw the knight 'guarding' h6 and gave up. Of course, pinned pieces guard nothing and if I'd noticed the pin I'd have been fine. |
May-28-07 | | prinsallan: <Larsker>Yep, that was exactly what I meant. CG.com. Queensac every monday is kind of boring and obvious. If you found at least another solution half of the mondays these puzzles would teach us much, much more. No nag intended, just friendly critisicm. |
