Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-07-10  David2009: An excellent Sicilian Dragon Yougoslav Attack in which Black improves on the famous game Karpov vs Korchnoi, 1974 "Korchnoi Écorché" (GOTD Dec-07-09) but still loses.

Karpov-Korchnoi had continued 17... Bxh6 18.Qxh6 Rfc8 which lost to 19 Rd3! R4c5 20 g5!! Rxg5 21 Rd5 Rxd5 (forced because of the fork) 22 Nxd5 winning at least the exchange. Here Black improves with 17...Rfc8! and after 18.Bxg7 Kxg7 19.Qh6+ Kg8 20.Rd3 Be6 21.g5 Nh5 22.Nf4 Qe5 23.Nxh5 gxh5

This position first occurred in I Rogers vs Altrichter, 1978 eventually won by Black after 24.Rxh5 Qg7 25.f4 d5 (also good is 25...Bg4 26. Rh4 Qxh6). Here White played 24.Qxh5. Now 24...Qg7 is less good (see the game which White wins).

Crafty End Game Trainer defending as Black continues 24...Kf8! when it is difficult for White to make progress. The best I have done is draw with 25.Rf1 Rxc3 26.Rxc3 Rxc3 27.bxc3 Qxc3 28.Qxh7 Qe3+ 29.Kd1 Qd4+ and Black takes perpetual check. Free on-line Crafty EGT link:

This post was inspired by kibitzing in L A Tan vs Mecking, 1976 (featuring Monday's POTD) in which Black played 16...Re8 instead of 16...Qa5.
