Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-25-09  Maynard5: This is another one of these games that is intriguing because of its multiple phases. Kholmov comes out of the opening with a small positional advantage: better pawn structure, and control of the center. Kan repeatedly attempts to break out of the bind, but by move 37, Black's kingside thrust has been neutralized, while White's knight on b3 blockades the pawn on b4, at the same time controlling the key square c5. Starting with 46. d5, the game turns into a tactical fight. Black sacrifices his queen for only a rook, but obtains two passed pawns. After 52. ... Nd7, Black is threatening ... Nc5, so Kholmov is forced to give back the queen in order to eliminate the passers. However, White emerges from the complications two pawns up, and goes on the win the endgame.
