tamar: Pillsbury was rumored to have said, "It will be Curt, and it will be short."
Apr-09-11  fab4: Von Bardelben.. was it the Steinitz defeat in the same tournamnent which led to this non appearance? A notorious drama queen that he was.. lol
Apr-09-11  fab4: Fischer for one would be highly uncomfortable with this game.

Richard Taylor: This has to be one of the greatest ever chess masterpieces. I have replayed it 2 exp 22 times in my "madness room" and I never tire of it. Wonderful!
Mar-14-13  RookFile: It would have funny if Pillsbury had played something like 1. Nh3, knowing that his opponent wasn't going to show up.
Mar-14-13  drnooo: people can say what they like, and apparently have here

this is one helluva ending

alekhine once said to beat me you have
do it in the opening, then the middlegame
and then the ending

with one mere move Pillsbury did
all three

what tremendous conceptualization

Mar-27-13  sydfhd: Deserves being game of the day.
Jul-23-14  zakkzheng: probably lost on time.
Jul-23-14  john barleycorn: As Tarrasch said about v. Bardeleben:

"Liegt die Partie erst ganz danieder, steht er auf und kommt nicht wieder."

Oct-04-14  bengalcat47: Well, Bardeleben found one way to avoid being defeated by Pillsbury's favorite variation in the Quuen's Gambit Declined Orthodox line!

offramp: The comments to this game are incredibly unfunny!

You really must try harder.

Oct-04-14  MarkFinan: Mate in 40. Come on guys step your chess game up, lol. How did this end up in the database then?
Mar-04-16  morfishine: <MarkFinan> This game is in the database because its part of Hastings 1895: Hastings (1895)

This loss was part of a stunning second half collapse by Bardeleben who started out 7.5/9

His collapse is thought to have begun following his crushing defeat vs Steinitz: Steinitz vs Von Bardeleben, 1895

Mar-04-16  5hrsolver: I hit the auto play button several times. I thought the screen froze.
Apr-18-16  gokusano: Game of the eon!
Apr-18-16  Howard: Reminds me of a game between Panno and Fischer from the 1970 interzonal, but I don't quite recall why....
Jul-01-16  zanzibar: Hey, this is a <stub>!

Rub-a-dub-dub, <CG> does stubs!

Jul-14-17  UnknownPlayer: Von Bardeleben was ill because of the game which he played 10 days ago vs. Steinitz: Steinitz vs Von Bardeleben, 1895

  whiteshark: <Here comes Curt>
Jul-14-17  WorstPlayerEver: He probably had more important things to do that day.
Jul-14-17  john barleycorn: <WorstPlayerEver> I suppose, in 1895 everything was more important than playing Pillsbury.
Jun-09-18  Marmot PFL: <But looking at the evolution of both players performance during the previous games, probably Pillsbury would have won had Bardeleben presented. This is because from round 10 to 16, Bardeleben scored only one point (+0, -5, =2), so he was already in a bad gust of wind. This is especially rare given the great performance Bardeleben had in the first 9 rounds (+6, -0, =3). Something must have happened to him in the middle.>

Maybe he found a bar that stayed open after the games ended.

Jun-12-18  Howard: Too bad Pillsbury wasted a White in this game---he would no doubt have preferred to have been Black.

MissScarlett: I was wondering why the tournament book refers to the inclusion of only 230 games.
