Jonathan Sarfati: Sarapu commented in his book "25 years in the NZ Championship" after B13:

"White has the opening advantage: queenside pawn majority and better development. Alan was not fully on his game in the tournament. He also had to do a lot of organising at the same time."

Black's main problems came later though, with ... Bf6 getting in the way of the Nd5, and ...Re8 weakening Pf7. However, 13... b6 would have lost to 14. Qe4 g6 15. c4.

Feb-20-07  AlanWilkinson: Yes, this was a hectic year for me and I was well over-stretched. It was my final Honours year at university and I was Secretary of the Canterbury Chess Club organising this huge Centennial Tournament at the same time.

This game has a gruesome ending!
