Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-25-08  slowcrawl: 22...Kf8 was a dumb move by black.
Mar-20-09  mrriddler: Don't see how Black could've missed the potential double attack unless I noticed his rating, lol. Possible he might have been under time pressure as well.
Apr-01-10  thegoodanarchist: A player with his rating should see the tactic - it isn't <that> difficult.

I think maybe he forgot to look for the tactic, which is more typical of the kinds of mistakes a 2062 player would make.

Feb-12-11  Lennonfan: 22.kf8 by a player with a rating of above 2000 was extremely poor play even under bad time pressures,and also blindfolded,and a possible prostate problem! White's turned out to be a fairly good player though.....!
May-29-13  bill11: The time pressures may have affected Goran but he still should had seen the double attack!
Jan-23-16  Sergash: According to Chessbase, Goran Fant had a rating of 2062 at the time of this game.

<10.Bxf5N> was apparently a new move by Carlsen. Before that and for example, there was 10.Nf3 Qc7 11.0-0 Nc6 Vitaly Tsheshkovsky vs Vassily Smyslov, 44th USSR Championship 1976 in Moscow, round 12, 0-1 (note that 11...Ba6! would apparently have been stronger for Black)

<12.h4?! Nc6=> appears inferior to 12.Nh3 cxd4 13.cxd4 Ba6 14.Bg5! Qd7! 15.0-0-0 Komodo 9.2 64 bits.

<13...f6?!> 13...Qd7= or 13...Qc7= according to Komodo 9.2 64 bits.

<14.exf6?! gxf6=> DIAGRAM Carlsen missed 14.Bf4! Kf7! (14...cxd4 15.cxd4 Nxd4 16.0-0-0! Ne6 17.Nh3! Komodo 9.2 64 bits.) 15.Nf3! cxd4! 16.cxd4! followed by 0-0 (or 0-0-0 in case of 16...Ba6) Komodo 9.2 64 bits.

<15..Qe7? 16.Ne2! > 15...Kf7 16.Nh3 (16.Ne2 cxd4! 17.cxd4! Ba6!=) cxd4! 17.cxd4! Ba6= / Komodo 9.2 64 bits.

<19...Qd7?!> 19...Qd6

<20.Rad1?! c4! > 20.Rfe1!

<21...Rg4?> The only move was 21...Ne7 Komodo 9.2 64 bits.

<22.g3?!> 22.Bd2 Nd8 23.Re2 Komodo 9.2 64 bits.

<22...Kf8??> as mentioned by Slowcrawl and Lennonfan. 22...Kg8 was the only move. But Black already had a very difficult game to defend...

Jan-23-16  Sergash: After Carlsen's last move, White mates in 14 moves or less.
May-09-20  jemptymethod: Haha yes you are correct mate in 14 per SF-11 at depth 36: h8h7 e3e6 d7d8 e6d6 d8e8 d6b8 e8d7 b8b7 d7e8 e1e6 g4g6 b7c8 e8f7 c8d7 h7g7 e6e7 f7g8 e7e8 g8h7 d7f5 g7g8 e8g8 h7g8 f5g6 g8h8 f4h6 b6b5 g6g7
May-11-20  jemptymethod: Check Goran Fant's rating page at https://ratings.fide.com/profile/17... it indicates he was 65 when he played this game and that his rating slipped 200 points in the next 3 years.
