Jul-10-06  Benzol: OK Stan. Here's that game of yours.
Jul-10-06  Stanley Yee: Hi Paul. Yes, it is something I would have played 30 years ago! Yakov Estrin does not agree with 8Bd3, and Eric Schiller would probably die of fright...
Jul-11-06  Benzol: Stan, you don't remember playing it then?
Jul-12-06  Stanley Yee: Paul, it was definitely me. I remember the opening, especially the 8Bd3, as I was experimenting with the Two Knights. I was trying to prove I could grab the pawn and hold it until the end game. He was higher rated and wouldn't give in to a boy ... Where was this published?
Jul-13-06  Benzol: Stan this game made it to the 'Wellington Sports Post' newspaper. Do you know what happened to N T Malley?
Jul-14-06  Stanley Yee: No. But if the game made it to the Sports Post it won't be for theory, or my being famous. N T Malley was about 50 then so he will be about 80 today. Either it was because it was an upset or a deciding match in the B grade.
Oct-02-06  ARival: <Stanly> do you remember where that Pillips Open was held by any chance,it wasnt at Upper Hut was it? Ive strange feeling I might have played it that, loosing to a young Mark Noble.

Jonathan Sarfati: If White wants to play Bd3, Qf3 first is usual. Black might have tried 9...Nd5 followed by Be7, 0-0 then f5 embarrassing the Ne4 and Bd3. But he played more slackly allowing one exchange after the other. Really, Black should have resigned a few moves into the king and pawn endgame.

IIRC, the Philips Open was held in Lower Hutt, and the tournament field was divided into 4-player round robins in accordance with rating. This is not to be confused with the 40-40 in Upper Hutt, which was a very popular event at one time, a 5-round Swiss in several grades with a great lunch provided. This was a Rapid tourney before Rapid tourneys were heard of.
