True. And the image of harry with a gun, within a hundred miles of Fischer is something I wish I hadn't just brought on myself. Harry David Chapman. You know something? That fits him.

Right <morf>

And when I think of all those fine members we have lost during the last couple of years.

But poor little Harry puking and peeing in every corner seems to be a thing too difficult to solve for the current administation.

harrylime: Quite sad when other forum users of whatever site try to get another user banned just because they dont like his/her opinions.

I've never tried to get anyone banned from any internet site.

You can put folk on IGNORE ( which again I do not ever do) ... but to try and get someone banned is like what I've seen in football games with players gettin opponents sent off thru cheating the ref it sucks and is cheap as hell...

Whatever ! lol lol

The cabal of ANTI FISCHER posters has ALWAYS been vocal and prevalent on this site ... it's the same posters and the same tired old arguments re Bobby ...

I put up with you posting this. You should put up with me. Ok ? Put me on IGNORE ! lol lol

Bobby Fischer for me revolutionised Chess and pulled Chess into the internet age. On his own. So there ! xxx

Really? I thought that was one of your least bonkers posts ever?

It's your prerogative to refuse to answer. I'll draw my own conclusions about what you had to fear from it.

Fischer is safe now, and one of you guys already got John Lennon. But have you ever been near any other celebrity with a gun? This isn't a frivolous question, I have a very real fear here.

Mar-13-21  avenant69: New information has come to light about this 2. game of the 1972 World Championship Match in Reykjavik.

In an interview with the online news website visir, Mr Hilmar. B. Jónsson, who at that ime was the Maitre d'Hotel at the Hotel Loftleidir where Fischer and his entourage were staying, explained how it came about that Fischer forfeited this second game: About half an hour before the game was supposed to start, Fischer came out of his room, mini-suite#428 on the third floor, and was met by a cohort of about 30 aggressive journalists, TV-crews, paparazzis, etc. Hating the guts of such people, his face turned livid with anger, he spun around, strode right back into his room and slammed the door shut . And that was the end of game two.

In order to rescue game 3, Hilmar, who had been given "carte-blanche" by his boss, the Hotel manager Mr. E. Aspelund to take "perfectly good care" of Fischer during his stay at the hotel, undertook a negotiation with that press-crowd, explaining to them, that if this would happen again it would be all over, and they'd all be on a plane back home the next morning: is that what you want ? Grumbles all around, but then he suggested a compromise to them: you be good now, and next time wait for him down in the lobby and take all your pictures when he passes by, OK ? Reluctantly, they agreed. But the next day, he went to fetch Fischer well over an HOUR before the game was to start, took him to a private dining room which he had prepared by then for Fischer and his crew (room kept under lock and key at all times) fed him a good lunch, and then whisked him unseen out of the hotel by escorting him all the way down to the basement, and along a huge corridor stretching for the whole length of the hotel, until they reached a backdoor exit and a waiting car. Game 3 was not only saved but WON ! the rest is history, as they say...

AylerKupp: <avenant69> Great story and very interesting stuff. Thanks for finding and posting the link. It appears that Hilmar Jónsson was as responsible for saving the match as James Slater. Still unanswered (and likely unanswerble) is the question of how the hotel staff failed to notice "a cohort of about 30 aggressive journalists, TV-crews, paparazzis, etc." loitering around Fischer's suite about ½ hour before the game was supposed to start. I think that the housekeeping at the hotel left something to be desired.

For those of us who don't read Danish, I converted the article to English courtesy of Google Translate, so please don't blame me for inaccuracies in the translation since I have no way of knowing if they were correct, and I see several that obviously were not, but hopefully you will understand the gist of the article. So please be gentle with your comments and direct them to Google, not me. My favorite assumed mistranslation is:

"Erling [the hotel manager] said that if this happened, I would have to take care of the carcass [???]. That is to say, when Bobby wakes up you are there and when Bobby goes to bed you are there, Erling said: "I want us to be able to say that he has been here all along." I'm assuming that's a literal translation and no more, since I suspect (and certainly hope!) that no chess players were harmed during the playing of this match. :-)

I did run the MS Word spell checker and corrected minor things like lack of spaces following a period at the end of a sentence and the first word of the next sentence, but otherwise it's a verbatim copy of the Google Translate results, including possibly grammatical errors, some of which are glaring.

Of course, Google Translate does not translate the text in the pictures so you have to either use your imagination or impose on a friend who reads Danish to translate the text to you.

And I don't know how accurate Hilmar Jónsson's recollections are but a chef who loves fish and enjoys his wine can probably be trusted. :-)

You can download the files from:

PDF version: https://www.mediafire.com/file/qsuy...

Enjoy!

Mar-14-21  avenant69: Good morning <AylerKupp> and thanks for those comments.

I think you will have better luck if you run Google translate on Icelandic=>English, instead of Danish=>English.

True, there are still some anecdotes in that article which are well worth translating (best is the one about Fischer and salmon), and I will perhaps come back to that shortly.
But before I do, I have one or two Fischer anecdotes from myself, and then a presentation of a man who was far more important than Slater and Hilmar as far as the successful outcome of this World Championship was concerned....
Cheers

AylerKupp: <<avenant69> I think you will have better luck if you run Google translate on Icelandic=>English, instead of Danish=>English.>

LOL! How embarrassing. Yes, of course, the translation should be from Icelandic to English. But fortunately Google Translate is smarter and more alert than I was and it automatically identified that the source language was Icelandic and translated the story from Icelandic to English. In fact, I couldn't figure out how to have it translate the page from a language different than what it automatically identified as the source language. So at least the story was appropriately translated using Icelandic as the source language, although I'm still not sure why it translated a word to "carcass" nor what word that was.

I have no idea why I thought that the story was translated assuming Danish as the source language. I certainly knew that the match was played in Reykjavík and not, say, Copenhagen although knowing neither Icelandic nor Danish, I couldn't tell what the source language was. But if had bothered to look at the original story (although I don't know why I would have) I would have noticed references to Reykjavík and I should have been able to make the proper language association.

Maybe I had breakfast on my mind when my wife and I typically have what in the USA is called a "Danish pastry" which I found out that according to Wikipedia it was brought to Denmark by the Austrians, although perhaps current day Danes may dispute that. Or maybe I had recently played a game featuring the Danish gambit. It's even possible that, for whatever reason, I had been thinking about a town called Solvang which is about 2 hours north of Los Angeles and which my wife and I have visited and stayed overnight several times. It's a tourist trap masquerading as a Danish villa, but it's fun and the food (in the right places) can be pretty good. Although I don't know the reason why I might have been thinking about Solvang.

But, still, my apologies for my confusion.

Mar-14-21  avenant69: No sweat about that confusion <AylerKupp>...

I will let that Hilmar-article be for the moment, and concentrate on my commentary on game 6. It will be in two parts: first my personal impression and experience about it, and secondly the general public's.

One question in the meantime: On this website, have you ever come across a list of the books (in English) which have so far been written about this 1972 Championship? At one time, I read somewhere that they had reached 50, later gone over 100 and recently that they were approaching 150 (this last one is probably a gross exaggeration, but who knows) Solvang sounds nice, we have such a Danish smörgasbord place up here too

No, I haven't. In trying to find them it may be important to make a distinction between books that are specifically about the Fischer vs. Spassky 1972 match and books about Fischer that address the match. I did a quick look on Amazon and it listed about 33 books in English about the match. I suspect there are more. And eBay also has a lot but many of them are duplicate and not necessarily books, and some of them are not in English.

It is definitely possibly that there are more than 50 books in English addressing the Fischer vs. Spassky 1972 match, either in their entirely or as part of one or more chapters. But how many? I have no idea.
