nice 14.Nxd6+!

Mar-17-12  JoergWalter: The position after 12.0-0 was reached between Kasparov and J. Polgar at the Corus 2000. Polgar played 12...0-0 while Shirov took the pawn 12...Nxe4. Kasparov passed by, looked at the board, pulled faces and turned his thumb down. Ivanchuk and Shirov did not notice this and it is not necessary to comment on Kasparov's behaviour.

30 minutes later Ivanchuk played 13.Nxe4. And after 14.Nxd6 Shirov knew something went wrong with his opening. after 19.c3 the material is even however white has the better pawn structure and a monster bishop on d5.

plang: 10..Nf6 had been introduced in the sbove-mentioned Kasparov-Polgar game, annotators had pointed out that 12..Nxe4? was not playable. 13..Bxd4 would have been answered by 14 Qh5. Shirov avoided a blistering attack by returning the piece and the sacrificed a queenside pawn for counterplay but the position remained hopeless.
