Jan-11-12  Uvulu: White seemed to be pretty well after 10. Nxc7, but later he let black develop active play and build up the pressure until he was completely lost. Where did he go wrong?

I think 13.Bd3 may be the key mistake here, because it allows 13... b5, which attacks White's center and opens up the b file for the black rook. Perhaps retreating the Knight to c3 would have been better, protecting the e4 pawn, keeping b5 under control and removing the knight as a target for Black's attack. What do you think?

FSR: I analyze this game and the 6...e5? trap generally at http://chicagochess.blogspot.com/20.... In brief, the answer to <Uvulu>'s question is that White erred seriously with 11.Nd5?, when 11...h6! forced him to give up his dark-squared bishop for the knight. This left Black with a strong unopposed dark-squared bishop, and already sufficient compensation for his accidentally sacrificed pawn. After a few further inaccuracies by White it was all over. White's best line is 10.Rd1! Rf8 11.Nxc7 Rb8 12.f3! with a large advantage (+1.32 according to Houdini 3).

Incidentally, Shulman improved with 6...Na6! in Agrest vs Y Shulman, 1998 (0-1, 31).
