Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-20-07  chessmoron: 1.f4 <tournament created by Wilson Hu/chessmoron; Time control: 2 hours and a half> d5 <Notes by Matthew Mckenna (AKA themadhair)/Toga II 1.2.1a and also by Bill Wall with the collaboration of Eric Schiller and Branko Katic> 2.g3 c5 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Bg2 Nc6 5.O-O e6 <McKenna: Last book move. > 6.d3 Be7 <McKenna: To quote Schiller - 'Flexible and strong'> 7.e4 Qb6 <Wall: Appears to be a new move (Schiller's idea). We had one game with 7...O-O in our database. > 8.Nc3 Bd7 9.exd5 exd5 10.Ne5 Be6 11.Nxc6 bxc6 12.f5 Bd7 <McKenna:The last few moves were semi-forced. > 13.g4 <McKenna: No human would ever play this. This was rejected by everybody except Toga. > O-O 14.g5 Ne8 15.Kh1 Qd8 <Mckenna: The masters didn't fear the white attack. It was 'vaporware' as someone said. This is playing for an endgame advantage and pressure the g-pawn. > 16.Qh5 Bxf5 <McKenna: Taking the 'bait'> 17.Rxf5 g6 18.Qh6 gxf5 19.Qxc6 Nc7 <Mckenna: Toga’s best line>. 20.Bf4 Rc8 21.Nxd5 Nxd5 22.Qxd5 Qxd5 23.Bxd5 <McKenna: Interesting that Toga thinks the position is equal after a long think. Black was confident of endgame chances and I have to agree with this assessment. > Rcd8 24.Bc4 Kg7 25.Rf1 Kg6 26.h4 <McKenna: A key move in Toga's plan. > Bd6 27.Bd2 <Mckenna: 27.Bxd6 Rxd6 Colorless for white. > Rb8 <Wall: 27...Rde8 was considered, but not 27...Rfe8? 28.h5+ Kxh5 29.Bxf7+> 28.b3 <McKenna: A quintessential Toga move. > Rbe8 <Wall: if 28...Rfe8 29.h5+ Kxh5 30.Bxf7+ Kg4 Bxe8> 29.Bd5 f6 <Wall: if 29...Re2? 30.h5+ Kxh5 31.Bf3+ wins for White. > 30. h5+ Kxh5 31. gxf6 Rxf6 32. Bc3 <Wall: if 32...Be5 33.Re1 looked strong for White. 33...Bxc3 34.Rxe8 Kg4 and Black has 4 disconnected pawns and White has 4 connected pawns. Bishop of opposite color may draw, though.> Rg6?! <Wall:33...Rh6 was [Wall’s] choice, 33...Rg6 was Schiller's choice, and 33...Be5 was Branko's choice at this critical position. When I looked into Rg6 I only looked for 33.Bf7 and thought we were OK. But White found the drawish move.> 33.Rxf5+ <Mckenna: 33.Bf7 Re2 34.Bxg6+ hxg6. Trying to bait Toga and get connected passers.> Kg4 34.Be4 <Wall: 34.Rf3? would have failed to 34...Re2 and Black should win.> Rh6+ 35.Kg1 Rh2 36.Rf7 Rxc2 <Wall: 36...Rxe4 37.dxe4 Rxc2 38.Bf6 should draw. Black could have also tried 36...Rh3 37.Rf7 Rg3+ 38.Kf1 Rxe4.> 37.Rg7+ Kf4 38.Rf7+ <Wall: Not 38...Ke3? 39.Rf3+ Ke2 40.Rf2+ and 41.Rxc2 wins for White.> 1/2-1/2
Jul-26-07  consafo: if black uses this setup against the leningrad bird / polar bear i think it is best to switch to a kind of nimzo larsen reti bird system with for example 7b3
