  plang: White's strategy in this theoretical line with 17 f4 and 19 d6 is to destroy the blockade of d6 even at the cost of a pawn. 20 Rb1 had been played in the draw Atlas-Horvath 2000; 22 a4 was new. If 22..b5 then 23 cxb..axb 24 a5 and the White a-pawn (supported by the bishop on g2) is stronger then Black's connected pair. Shipov suggested 29 Rxc5..Ra8 30 Bd3..Nb7 31 Be4..Nxc5 32 Bxa8 as an alternative. The key to Black's defense was 39..g5! forcing the exchange of White's g-pawn after which any ending with a white h-pawn along with a wrong-colored bishop would be drawn. 42..g4! was necessary; 42..h5? 43 Bf7..h4 44 g4..Ke4 45 Bg6+..Kf4 46 Bf5..Ke5 47 Ke3..Kd5 48 Bc8..Ke5 49 Bb7..Kd6 50 would have been winning for White.
