Morten: Very strange game. The fact that it is a correspondence game just adds to the mystery.
Mar-31-10  whiteshark: <Perhaps Black needed to use his rooks more.> and the knights, I'd like to add. ;D
Mar-31-10  sfm: Chess Bytes, 1968 issue:
"In '67 the player J.C.Torres, Argentina, complained to the UDAPA correspondence tournament organizers, that he still after 30 days had received no postcards with chess moves - socalled 'chess cards' - from any opponent. Big was his surprise when he was told that he had already played and lost 2 of his 3 games, in 10 and 13 moves.

Mr. Torres, a strong player, investigated matters further. It turned out that his 9 year old son who'd just learned the game had found the chess cards in the mail, and had replied to each of them with the best move he could find.

Mr. Torres objected, claiming that the result should be cancelled, but the tournament management decided that any player was responsible for correspondence brought to his house. 'So, next time I might bribe my opponents maid to make a silly move', Mr. Torres reportedly answered.

The UDAPA organizers regard the case as closed."

Phony Benoni: This looks like an exam. I think we're supposed to contrast and compare today's first 10 moves with yesterday's first 10 moves.

kevin86: An excellent exhibition of sleeping by black's rooks and knights;black led with his queen, like a boxer leading with his glass jaw.

I'd restate it <..... what CG is trying to accomplish ...>

Actually I think its to provide some comic relief from the tough work we have this week honoring Vasily Smyslov

maxi: I don't get it. The kid resigned because he was losing a piece? He was not such a poor player, then.

true!

Once: <mworld: no pun at all>

I think it's a play on "one on one" and the fact that Juan junior was playing on behalf of Juan senior. I'd call that a pun. Not a rolling on the floor, wetting myself with uncontrollable mirth sort of joke, but a pun all the same.

Great explanation by <sfm> of what was really happening here. That gave me more of a laugh.

Mar-31-10  Riverbeast: There have been some weird Games Of The Day lately

I would call this "Juan bad move after another"

Mar-31-10  Jack Kerouac: Well, there were many drugs floating about in 1967; I think I remember....

chrisowen: White is the don, Juan pushes the right buttons. Qh4's out of book, the teachings? Cast a neddy around whilst keeping one eye on the queen's gift as glee. Arranging black Juan Carlos experiences no shame n' manifests it until Bd3 which is tense. Grity energy for a kid, then the magic passes over.
Mar-31-10  mworld: <Once> I apologize for my bad joke

  maxi: "pun" for pun
Mar-31-10  moi: fun to see how 7...Qxc2 is forbiden:
8 Qxc2 Bxc2
9 d3! trapping the bishop ...Be7
10 Bg5 and now, Rc1 will capture black's lightsquare bishop whatever. :)
Mar-31-10  TheChessGuy: No, it's a pun. Refers to Bob Dylan's 1966 album "Blonde on Blonde." Great music on that one, do listen!

patzer2: This is a poorly played Latvian gambit by Black. The mainline is 3...Qf6 as in E Garzon vs M Herrera, 2004.

Unfortunately, with the strength of computer analysis, the Latvian gambit is pretty much finished as a serious attempt in Master play.

Jul-04-11  sfm: I admit it: My story below was an invention from A to Z. But a good one, eh? ;-)
