Position after 27 d2-d4? e5xd4! 28 c3xd4 c5-c4!

Carlsen (Black) has effectively traded his <CENTRAL> Black e5-pawn for the <FLANK> White c3-pawn.

This exchange would be a strategic mistake in the opening or early middlegame. But here in the early endgame, it allowed Carlsen to create a 3-2 <OUTSIDE PAWN MAJORITY> which helps win the game.

Mar-28-08  notyetagm: In the final diagram above, just look how impressive the <PAWN CENTER> is: those White d4-, e4-, and f4-pawns sure do control the center!

But this position is an <EARLY ENDGAME>, not the opening or middlegame, where <PASSED PAWNS> and in particular <OUTSIDE PASSED PAWNS> rule.

So Carlsen has instructively given up the <CENTER> in order to create a <3-2 QSIDE PAWN MAJORITY>.

Exemplary endgame play by GM Carlsen.

May-05-08  whiteshark: <notyetagm> I think upto now we didn't understand the substance of this endgame.

For instance

- black traded immediately another q-side pawn off (which made the <OUTSIDE PASSED PAWNS> more distant)

- the varying rook activity

- 'connectivity' ♖-♘-♙♙
