Jul-10-16  joddle: I don't know the theory for this so well, but this looked like a very instructive game to me. In particular, immediately after 5... a5, white plays 6. e5 and 7. d4, transposing to a sort-of Boleslavsky French structure at the cost of a tempo, but where black has not played c7-c5. I think it also important that white has not yet committed the bishop to g2 by playing g2-g3, so that he can play 8. Bb5 on the next move.

The move a5 instead of c5 looks pretty unfavorable for black in the resulting position because black will need to play c5 at some point which will leave b5 permanently weak. This happened in the game and black had to go to extra lengths like Nc6-a7 to kick the bishop.
