Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-08-09  Verklarte Nacht: If white had played 39. Bxe5 black would lose after 39...fxe5 40. Qe6+ Kf8 41. Rxf7+ Nxf7 42. Bc4 Re8 43. Qxf7+, but after 39...Ne8! I looked at several different variations but couldn't find anything that leads to a winning advantage, black seems to hold on to a draw, e.g. 40. Rxd8+ Kxd8 41. Bxf6+ Kc8 looks okay for black.
Dec-08-09  ughaibu: What about 40.Rf7 followed by Rd8?
Dec-08-09  Verklarte Nacht: After 40. Rxf7+ Kxf7 41. Rxd8 Qd1+ white will have to block with Be2 to avoid perpetual check which allows Qxd8
Dec-08-09  ughaibu: I dont see it. The king can go to h3 then the bishop can be withdrawn from e5.
Dec-09-09  Verklarte Nacht: huh, I think you're right
Dec-11-09  Verklarte Nacht: I saw this combination at the Chess Notes by Edward Winter site, it was a post from may of this year, really a unique and beautiful combination
Jun-28-11  supastarr: wow, great combo, marini missed his chance to score one against the great spassky
Jun-28-11  supastarr: 39 Bxe5 Ne8 40 Rxf7+ Kxf7 41 Rxd8 Qd1+ 42 Kg3 Qg1+ Kh3 43 Qh1+ Bh2 44 Qf3+ does seem to be a perpetual, right? but I think white is winning after 42 Kg2 and then both ...Qxg4+ 43 Bg3 and ...Qd2+ 43 Kh3 Qxe3+ 44 Bg3 there are no more checks
