<Here, L'Ami clinched the game by 31...Qxf2+! 32.Qxf2 Rxf2, when 33.Kxf2 is impossible because of 33...b2, when the pawn queens.>

And now the whole point of Black's play is that 33 ♔g1x♖f2?? allows 33 ... b3-b2 and the passed b-pawn queens.

So l'Ami (Black) was able to win a pawn and get his rook onto the 7th rank because he was tactically alert enough to spot the <PASSED PAWN VERSUS ROOK TRICK>, the Black b3-passer versus the White a7-rook on the adjacent a-file.

Note how the doubled Black b4-pawn here serves the valuable purpose of <SHIELDING> the front b-file passer so that the maneuvre ♖a7-b7 does not threaten the front doubled passed pawn.

Aug-20-08  Bob726: Wade 0-11 HA!
Nov-24-08  newzild: Give the guy a break - he's 87 years old, or something like that, and has made an enormous contribution to chess.

Jun-10-25  Peinalkes6: Robert Wade played George Alan Thomas, born in 1881 and Erwin L'Ami, born in 1985!

perfidious: I may yet break that mark: I played Nicolas Rossolimo, born in 1910 and have recently faced some opponents born in the 2010s.
Jun-10-25  Peinalkes6: That's amazing perfidious. Must be frustrating playing these whippersnappers who know +20 moves of opening theory.
