  GrahamClayton: 25... g6 26. Nxe5 Qe6 27. Qh8+ Kxh8 28. Nxg6+ Kg8 29. Ne7# is a nice finish, with two consecutive discovered checks.

fredthebear: If Black takes 24...gxQf6 25.Rg4+ Kh8 26.Bxf6#, Morphy's Mate (see diagram). Such can be found on page 142 as Mate No. 14A in Victor Kahn's classic co-authored book "The Art of the Checkmate."

However, Chapter 15: Morphy's Mate gives a much wider range of back rank mate examples than that which is typically considered Morphy's Mate today by the bishop check and rook cut-off on the open g-file. These beautiful examples of Ch. 15 include queen sacrifices to create the position for the winning check, but I have not warmed up to each example being a true Morphy's Mate as I think of it. Still, a fabulous chapter of mating combinations by any name. (BTW, Pillsbury's Mate gives the final check w/a rook against Kg8.)

fredthebear: See the diagram by the late tpstar on Oct-22-08 (page 1 of the kibitz). It's virtually the same finish. Nimzowitsch vs E V Nielsen, 1930
