Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-26-13  estrick: This game contains a variation of the "Tarrrasch Trap" which normally occurs in the Steinitz Defense.

After 12. Nxe5, Ivkov must have recognized what he'd gotten himself into, and accepted the loss of a pawn, rather than continue into the trap, which results in the loss of the exchange.

For comparison, see
Tarrasch vs G Marco, 1892

Aug-26-13  estrick: It's interesting to see how Tal succeeds in getting all of the remaining pieces off the board in just eleven more moves, and converts this game into an easily won king and pawn ending.
Aug-26-13  estrick: Tal does not worry about getting his pawns doubled and isolated on the e-file. And he further isolates his h-pawn with 25. gxh5.
This strategem seems to allow White's king greater centralization, while forcing Black's king to the side of the board.

After 34. Kg5, Black is apparently in zugzwang

Feb-17-15  suenteus po 147: <estrick> Most instructive! Thank you for linking to this game from the Tarrasch-Marco game, and for your commentary on Tal's strategy.
Mar-30-15  Nova: Nice game! I especially like the final position, with the clever 37. e6!, rather than the tempting Kf6 and taking on f7, which should also work but takes longer.
