Black moved away from the a-pawn with 53..Kd5 and was punished by some excellent play by his opponent. He should have eliminated the a-pawn straight away with 53..Kb4 54 Ke3 Kxa4 and after 55 Kf4 Ne2+ 56 Kg5 Kb5 57 Kxg6 Kc6 58 Nf5 Kd7 Black's King arrives in time to save the game.
