luzhin: Yet another example of a back-rank combo--surprising how often it occurs in GM games.
Jun-20-09  hedgeh0g: Yeah, especially in Chucky's recent games. His last win over Kamsky utilised back rank issues as well.

Black's rook needs to stay in contact with the knight on c5 to avoid it being taken by the bishop. Rcxc5 is impossible because of Re8#. Obviously, the response to Rg5 is h4.

Jun-20-09  jurado96: A well deserve defeat by Nisipeanu
Jun-20-09  wanabe2000: The Novelty seems to be 11....Rc8. Where is Wannabe discussing "deflection" and "leaving pieces enprise", "back rank mate"? I look forward to your comments.
Jun-20-09  WhiteRook48: a well deserved defeat??
Jun-20-09  Ulhumbrus: Instead of 17...Rc5, 17...Rf8-e8 threatens 18...Qe2 mate.
Jun-20-09  hedgeh0g: <jurado96>, you wouldn't happen to be Nisipeanu's ex, would you?
Jun-20-09  furrer: <Ulhumbrus> ♖f8-e8 doesnt threat mate, as white has ♔g1! - so ♙xb4 can easily be played.
Jun-20-09  GreenArrow: Nisipeanu is not rewarded for his creative pawn sac 12...d5?!. The serious error seems to be 22...Nc5. Instead, 22...Nf6! is unclear after 23.Re7 Bd8! 24.Rxb7 Re8+ 25.Kd3 Ne4 when at a lower level contest I think white would be in danger of losing, even though 'technically' he should be better.
Jun-20-09  ajile: I just won 538 chessbucks!

Time to buy a brand new TV!

Jun-20-09  Marmot PFL: I believe the player who plays positional sacs should play fast and confidently. This will affect the other player's confidence (unless it is someone like Korchnoi) and gives him less time to calculate. Once you are down in time and material though that is trouble.
Jun-20-09  matherd1: beginner question...What's the win here? What's the point of the last pawn move? (i.e. what difference does it make it the Nisipeanu moves the rook from f5 to g5?)
Jun-20-09  refutor: ...Rg5 then h4 followed by Bxc5
Jun-21-09  matherd1: thanks
